Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, August 24 (Reporters Tang Shining and Zhou Yuan) — Reporters learned from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on the 24th that Beidou has made significant progress in its application in the consumer sector. In the first half of 2026, total domestic smartphone shipments reached 133 million units, with over 98% supporting Beidou positioning; As of the first half of the year, more than 14 million shared two-wheeled vehicles had been equipped with Beidou-based standalone positioning systems, accounting for more than 90% of the domestic market’s total fleet.

  The Beidou Satellite Navigation System is a vital component of China’s spatial information infrastructure. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology held a media roundtable on the same day to promote the large-scale application of Beidou. Shi Huikang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Electronics and Information at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, explained that in recent years, China has continued to expand the large-scale implementation of BeiDou in areas such as consumer markets, industrial manufacturing, and integrated innovation. By coordinating efforts in pilot programs, product promotion, standard refinement, and ecosystem development, China has achieved phased results in the large-scale application of BeiDou.

  It is reported that relevant authorities are supporting the research, development, and industrialization of Beidou products featuring high precision, anti-jamming capabilities, and low power consumption, while driving improvements in product performance and sustained reductions in costs. By the end of 2025, cumulative shipments of domestically produced BeiDou-compatible chips and modules are expected to approach 2.6 billion units, and the total number of BeiDou-enabled terminal devices in use is projected to exceed 2.2 billion units (sets).

  While the industry’s supply capacity continues to be strengthened, the pilot and demonstration effects in cities are becoming increasingly evident. As of the first half of this year, 39 pilot cities for large-scale Beidou applications had cumulatively deployed more than 12 million Beidou standalone positioning terminals (sets). Multiple cities have achieved 100% adoption of Beidou in specific sectors—including shared two-wheeled vehicles, metered taxis, official vehicles, “passenger buses, tourist buses, and hazardous materials transport vehicles,” agricultural machinery, and police equipment—demonstrating a prominent benchmarking effect.

  Beidou has been deeply integrated into a wide range of industries. The number of Beidou terminal devices in key domestic industries is close to 40 million units (sets), and the comprehensive application penetration rate in these industries is approximately 90%; Beidou has become widely adopted in consumer scenarios such as shared two-wheeled vehicles, smartwatches, and in-vehicle applications. The installed base of wearable devices supporting Beidou positioning exceeds 160 million units, and more than 100 million passenger vehicles are equipped with Beidou in-vehicle positioning devices.

  Reporters have learned that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in collaboration with relevant parties, will further consolidate the foundation for Beidou’s innovative development, continue to support research into key technologies and their industrial applications, and persist in fostering pilot projects for the large-scale application of Beidou. At the same time, building on the large-scale application of Beidou, the ministry will actively foster the spatiotemporal information industry and promote the coordinated development of satellite positioning, navigation, timing, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), communications, and satellite internet.
